Market Context & Historical Notes
1,000 Hours marks Green Day’s first commercially issued recording and documents the band’s transition from its original incarnation as Sweet Children into the identity that would soon define its career. Released in 1989 while the group remained embedded in the Northern California punk underground, the EP reflects the East Bay all-ages scene centered on venues such as 924 Gilman Street. Issued by Lookout! Records during its early, scene-driven period, the archive’s copy is found with a photocopied sleeve on green paper typical of small-scale, volunteer-run production. The Laytonville address variant situates the record within the label’s formative phase, characterized by modest pressings and informal distribution. Although some examples have a photocopied insert, the present copy is lacking this item. Within Green Day’s discography, 1,000 Hours functions as a documentary origin, preserving the band’s earliest recorded work prior to broader exposure or commercial development.
