Release history and significance
In the biography issued for his debut album, Shakur described “Trapped” as a song about the limits imposed on people living in poor neighbourhoods. The record’s first-person anger brought that argument into the foreground of his solo debut. [2]
The single credits Pee Wee with producing “Trapped” and Shock G with producing “The Lunatic.” The writing credits for “Trapped” name R. Gooden, R. Tyson and T. Shakur. Each song has its instrumental on the same side, a practical arrangement for radio and club play. [1]
When journalist Michael Small interviewed Shakur in November 1991, he had no lyric sheet for the new album and asked him to recite some of “Trapped.” Shakur connected its words with his account of being arrested for jaywalking in Oakland. The recording preserves how personally he spoke about the song at the beginning of his solo career. [3]
