Market Context & Historical Notes

“Never Grow Old / You Grow Closer” was recorded in 1956 at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where 14-year-old Aretha Franklin sang gospel material and accompanied herself on piano. The J-V-B label was run by Joe Von Battle as a small Detroit operation that recorded sermons, gospel performances, blues, and rhythm and blues from within the city’s Black musical life. This local church record, issued by a neighborhood label, preserves Franklin before her public sound was shaped by the modern music industry and clarifies Franklin’s gospel foundation, including the elements that would define her later mature work: command of phrasing, self-accompaniment, dynamic control, and the ability to turn sacred material into testimony. Later Checker issues circulated the recordings more broadly, but the J-V-B 47 issue remains the original physical point of Aretha’s entry into the world of recorded music.
