Release history and significance
Motown signed him in the summer of 1961. In March 1962 he recorded “I Call It Pretty Music, But the Old People Call It the Blues,” his first single. Berry Gordy and Clarence Paul wrote the song, with Paul producing. [1] [2]
Tamla divided the performance between two sides of a seven-inch single. This promotional version contains both parts, unlike the single-sided promos also issued for the song. [2]
The debut came before the breakthrough. Two albums followed in 1962, and a live recording of “Fingertips” became the number-one single that made Little Stevie Wonder a national star in 1963. [1]
Market context
The release exists in both commercial and promotional forms. Discogs distinguishes the two-sided DJ issue represented here from the single-sided promotional versions, an important distinction when comparing copies. [2]
