Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys

Alex Turner had been writing privately since school, long before he felt comfortable discussing lyrics with his friends. “Fake Tales of San Francisco” grew from watching would-be rock stars at his local venue—a sharply observed song that became one half of Arctic Monkeys’ debut release. [1]

Release history and significance

Turner and Jamie Cook received guitars for Christmas. By the following March, Cook could already play the James Bond theme while Turner knew only a few chords. In the band’s first NME interview, Turner remembered that friendly competition pushing him to practise harder. [1]

The group began giving away demos at gigs and posting songs online. Turner was startled when a Sheffield audience sang the words back at him: listeners had been passing the recordings around. “Fake Tales of San Francisco” drew on the scene-chasers he saw while working at a local music venue. [1]

Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys paired “Fake Tales of San Francisco” with “From the Ritz to the Rubble” on Bang Bang Recordings in May 2005. Mike Crossey produced, engineered and mixed the recording at the Motor Museum; the seven-inch is a double A-side. [2]
