Rivers

Thomas Jack is an Australian DJ and producer and one of the originators of tropical house: the relaxed, melodic strain of dance music he helped establish and gave its name. “Rivers,” his 2015 breakthrough single, brought that sunny sound to a wider audience. OMMA’s Finnish promotional CD-R preserves its 2:58 radio edit. [2] [3] [4]

Release history and significance

Tropical house emerged in the early 2010s as a warm, easygoing approach to house music. It pairs a steady dance pulse with bright melodies and instrumental colors such as flute, saxophone, acoustic guitar and marimba. The emphasis is on tunefulness and a summery atmosphere. Jack’s own music drew on deep house, acoustic rock and jam bands, bringing those influences into the electronic dance setting. [4] [5]

Jack helped turn that approach into a recognizable movement. He coined “tropical house” as a playful description of the music’s sunny character; as he explained in a 2015 interview, other people adopted the phrase and it took on a life of its own. His Tropical House mix series offered a gathering place for the emerging sound, with guest mixes by artists including Felix Jaehn, Bakermat and Robin Schulz. Kygo and Klingande became closely associated with the genre. Jack’s foundational contribution was both musical and curatorial: he helped shape the sound, named it, and brought its practitioners to an audience. [3] [4]

By the time “Rivers” appeared in July 2015, Jack had already built a following through original tracks such as “Symphony” and “The Final Speech,” remixes and DJ mixes. “Rivers” therefore represents his breakthrough as a recording artist within an already developing career. Released digitally on 10 July, it combined guitar, percussion and vocals from Jack McManus and Tim Woodcock, with production by Jack and JUNKX. Those elements made the song an accessible expression of the style he had helped popularize. [4] [6] [7]

The Finnish Parlophone promo reduces the song to a 2:58 radio edit. Its writing credits name Thomas Jack, Dennis Bierbrodt, Guido Kramer, Jürgen Dohr, Jack McManus and Tim Woodcock. As a physical object, this modest CD-R documents the broadcast promotion of a career that had first gathered momentum online. In September 2015, Jack described fitting studio sessions around constant travel and assembling recordings on the road: the online tastemaker was now a touring artist reaching listeners through radio as well as his mixes.
