Chega de Saudade

João Gilberto made a quiet voice and a guitar sound like a new way of thinking about Brazilian song. His debut LP, Chega de Saudade, brought that approach to twelve tracks, with arrangements by Antônio Carlos Jobim. [1]

Release history and significance

For Jobim, arranging this music meant knowing when to leave it alone. In his original sleeve note, he explained that the orchestra should preserve Gilberto’s freedom, agility and unmistakably personal phrasing. The aim was to keep the singer’s spontaneity intact, even when other musicians joined him. [1]

Released in 1959, the album placed the Jobim–Vinícius de Moraes title song alongside “Desafinado,” Gilberto’s own “Bim Bom” and “Hô-bá-lá-lá,” and songs by Dorival Caymmi, Ary Barroso and Carlos Lyra. It helped bring bossa nova to a wider audience by making the relationship between voice, guitar and rhythm the center of the record. [1]
