Jole Blon / When Sin Stops

With Buddy Holly’s encouragement and production, Waylon Jennings made his first commercial single in Clovis, New Mexico. Recorded in 1958 and released in 1959, “Jole Blon” and “When Sin Stops” preserve a young singer working across country, Cajun song and rock and roll, long before his emergence as a central figure in outlaw country.

Release history and significance

Jennings’s first record grew out of his friendship with Buddy Holly. Eddie Reeves’s account places the session at Norman Petty’s studio in Clovis in September 1958, with King Curtis on saxophone, and dates the Brunswick release to April 1959. The distinction matters: 1958 identifies the recording, while 1959 is the release year used here.

“Jole Blon” draws on a Cajun standard; “When Sin Stops” places Jennings alongside the early rock-and-roll sound of his mentor. Together, the sides reveal an artist finding his voice before the recordings that made him widely known. This is catalogued as Jennings’s first commercial single, rather than as the beginning of his later outlaw-country style.

In the 1970s, Jennings became closely associated with musicians’ demands for greater control over their records. The Country Music Hall of Fame describes his insistence on choosing material, musicians and recording arrangements. This earlier Brunswick single captures a different stage: a young performer benefiting from Holly’s support, with the boundaries between country and rock and roll still open.

Manufacture and scarcity

No original manufacturing quantity has been established. The original Brunswick configuration is documented, but a numerical pressing estimate would require evidence beyond present-day availability.
