Why Debuts Matter

Jimi Hendrix Experience Jimi Hendrix Experience

The Origins of Modern Music Archive documents the physical debuts of artists who shaped the musical landscape. Many of these artists were teenagers, like Paul Simon (age 15) and Art Garfunkel (age 16) who debuted under the name “Tom and Jerry” and sold 100,000 records with their first cut. Some of these artists were adult veterans of the hustle, like Farrokh Bulsara, a Zanzibarian refugee who played in multiple London bands before becoming the lead singer of Smile. Both the band and the singer changed their names. Soon the world met Queen, led by the 27-year-old Freddy Mercury.

These musical keystones from across genres and from around the world, punk, hip-hop, country, reggae, electronic, and others, reveal how culture develops from personal dreams to world-shaping movements, from local tastes to global crazes. Debuts capture the first public proof of an artist’s voice, scene, and technology before industry polish. They document local musical ecosystems that vanish as fame scales, and pair a musical origin story with a primary document – the record itself – suitable for classrooms, exhibitions, and media.

Some of these debuts were flops: Amateurish music that emerged before the skills that launched the artist to fame had fully developed. Others were memory-holed as then-unknown artists struggled to gain attention in a competitive music market. Eminem’s first record crashed so hard that, enraged by his failures, he forged the persona Slim Shady that rose to beat the world.

But not all debuts fizzled. One struggling Las Vegas group had their demo tape passed by hand from one skeptical record executive to another until it landed in the offices of Lizard King Records, a tiny British label. The label took a shot, brought the band to London, and in 2003 cut 500 copies of the band’s debut single on white vinyl. The band: The Killers, and that debut song, Mr. Brightside, is now a cultural phenomenon – the longest running hit in the history of the U.K. charts.
