Release history and significance

At New Bethel, Aretha performed before the sermons of her father, the Reverend C. L. Franklin. His preaching already reached a large audience through records. Her own singing entered that same recording network in 1956, captured live with her at the piano. [1]

Joe Von Battle’s local J-V-B label issued “Never Grow Old” with “You Grow Closer” as a 78 rpm single. The label identifies her through both her name and her family connection: the daughter of New Bethel’s pastor. It is a small physical reminder of the church community in which her musical authority first developed. [2] [3]

The performances later circulated more widely through Checker releases and the album commonly known as Songs of Faith. This J-V-B disc preserves their original local release, a decade before Franklin’s Atlantic breakthrough. [1] [3]

Market context

The original J-V-B single sits alongside later Checker editions and album reissues of Franklin’s church recordings. The label and disc material distinguish this shellac edition within that release history. [1] [2]

A J-V-B 78 of “Never Grow Old” sold on eBay for US$40 on 30 November 2020. The seller graded it V on the VJM scale and described scuffs, light scratches and wear around the spindle holes. [4]

Physical Description

A 10-inch shellac disc with light blue-green labels printed in black. The labels carry J-V-B’s address at 3530 Hastings in Detroit and identify Franklin as the daughter of the Reverend C. L. Franklin, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church.

The disc is graded VG-. Its playing surfaces show scuffing, cloudiness and general wear, with no cracks, edge loss or delamination recorded. Both labels remain complete and legible, with wear around the spindle hole.
