Ce n’était qu’un rêve / L’amour viendra

Céline Dion was twelve when she made the song that brought her to René Angélil’s attention. “Ce n’était qu’un rêve” began as a family collaboration in Québec; this French picture-sleeve single carried it to another market in 1982. [1] [2]

Release history and significance

Dion wrote the song with her mother, Thérèse, and brother Jacques. Her mother sent a cassette to Angélil because he had managed Ginette Reno, a family favorite. At their meeting, he handed Céline a pencil to use as a microphone and asked her to sing as though she faced a full house. Her performance persuaded him to take on the young singer. [2]

The first Canadian single appeared on Les Disques Showbizz in 1981. The following year, Pathé issued this French edition, pairing “Ce n’était qu’un rêve” with “L’amour viendra.” Its portrait sleeve presents the teenage singer at the beginning of her international career. [1]

Dion’s first television appearance came on Michel Jasmin’s Québec talk show in June 1981. The cassette, the audition and that early broadcast belong to the same brief period in which music made within a large family became a professional recording career. [2]

Market context

The French Pathé single and the 1981 Canadian Showbizz issue occupy different places in Dion’s early discography. This edition combines the debut song with a French-market portrait sleeve; the earlier Canadian pressing documents its first commercial release. Edition, sleeve presence and condition are the useful points of comparison. [1]
