Deadmau5

OMMA Catalogue Number

OMMA-0077

Artist

Deadmau5

Title

I Don’t Want No Other / Suck This

Release Details

12-inch vinyl single issued by Awesome Records in 2000. Pressed in Canada and released as a commercial retail issue. The record circulated without a picture sleeve, consistent with independent electronic music distribution practices of the period.

Edition & Variant Identification

First press commercial edition. Issued as a retail 12-inch single bearing the Deadmau5 logo but without the artist’s name printed on the label. Notably, the label features an early graphic rendering of the mouse-head motif that would later evolve into the fully realized “mau5head” helmet, marking the first visual appearance of the Deadmau5 persona in recorded form.

Matrix & Pressing Data

Side A runout inscription reads: I DON’T WANT-A 45RPM AWESOME RECORDS.

Side B runout inscription reads: I DON’T WANT-AA 45RPM AWESOME RECORDS.

All matrix information is machine-etched and consistent across known first pressings.

Physical Description

12-inch vinyl record pressed on black vinyl. Issued without a printed picture sleeve and housed in a plain generic outer sleeve. No inserts are present. Labels are clean, evenly printed, and retain sharp definition, including the early mouse-head graphic.

Factory-Origin Characteristics

The spindle hole exhibits attached vinyl filaments consistent with residue from the original spindle-hole drilling process. These filaments remain intact and unremoved, suggesting minimal playback since manufacture. This characteristic is identified as a factory-origin artifact rather than post-production damage.

Condition Report

Vinyl is in Near Mint (NM) condition, retaining full original gloss with no visible surface marks. Labels are likewise a strong Near Mint (NM), showing no spindle trails, writing, stickers, or alterations. Overall presentation suggests careful storage and negligible handling since pressing.

Provenance

Originates from the deadstock inventory of a closed retail store specializing in late-1990s and early-2000s electronic music. The record remained unrecognized within that inventory due to the absence of the artist’s name on the label and was later identified during a reorganization of the stock.

Acquired from Discogs seller bettadaze on 16 December 2025. Seller correspondence confirms long-term storage as part of an unsold retail archive rather than secondary-market circulation. The seller originally identified the record as VG quality, a significant under-grade for this rarely played record.

Photomatching & Verification

Photographic documentation of the present copy is preserved within the OMMA visual archive, confirming label layout, runout inscriptions, and the presence of intact spindle-hole vinyl filaments consistent with a first press commercial copy in near-unused condition.

Market Context & Historical Notes

“I Don’t Want No Other / Suck This” constitutes the earliest commercially issued recording in OMMA associated with Joel Zimmerman’s Deadmau5 project and preserves an early articulation of the Deadmau5 visual identity, including a prototype mouse-head mark on the label. Issued before the persona had fully consolidated into a widely recognized brand, the record is presented with minimal information and does not print the artist’s later stage name as a conventional credit.

The understated, generic packaging and sparse label copy are consistent with an early-stage electronic release circulated primarily on practical utility rather than artist recognition. As a result, first press copies could readily pass through retail and DJ channels without attracting special notice at the time of issue; in retrospect, they serve as primary documentation of the project’s origin period and the initial formation of the Deadmau5 persona.

Canonical Status in OMMA

This release is recognized by the Origins of Modern Music Archive as the canonical debut recording of the artist under the Deadmau5 name.
