Thingamajawn

Diplo’s early vinyl identity was Diplodocus. “Thingamajawn” introduced that name on a small Money Studies seven-inch in 2003, with two versions that point toward the different dance-floor traditions he was bringing together. [1] [2]

Release history and significance

Turntable Lab, which pressed the record, identifies it as both Money Studies’ first vinyl pressing and Diplodocus’s debut on vinyl. Staff later found copies tucked away in their office and offered the rediscovered stock for sale—a modest afterlife for a record made before his international breakthrough. [1]

The release belongs to the period when Wesley Pentz and Low Budget were developing Hollertronix in Philadelphia. Pentz recalled wanting DJ work and feeling out of place in existing clubs. Their own parties gradually attracted a following for the combinations of records they played together. [3]

The seven-inch pairs the “Birney Elementary Version” with the “Baltimore Version.” Its compact format gives each treatment a side of its own; the later twelve-inch has a different Money Studies catalogue number. [2]
