Deep Cover

Release history and significance
Snoop’s invitation to the studio began with a tape. He, Warren G and Nate Dogg had been making music as 213 with turntables, records and a microphone. Warren passed the tape to Dre, then called Snoop with the news. Snoop thought his friend was joking until Dre came on the phone and invited him to work. [1]
The young musicians entered a busy Hollywood studio world with little money but plenty of enthusiasm. Engineer John Payne recalled that the Deep Cover soundtrack gave Snoop the exposure he had been waiting for. Nate Dogg remembered his friend’s breakthrough as encouragement for the whole circle: their own turns might come next. [1]
The single credits Dre as producer, with writing shared by Dre, Snoop and Colin Wolfe. Its promotional twelve-inch provides an uncensored version on side A and radio and instrumental versions on the reverse. The introduction became the beginning of a partnership that carried into The Chronic. [2]
