Eric B. Is President / My Melody
Rakim did not need to shout to hold a listener’s attention. On the duo’s 1986 debut single, his measured voice and intricate rhymes made a different kind of authority audible. Getting that delivery onto tape meant trusting his own ear. [1]

Release history and significance
Rakim was still considering college and football when the opportunity to make a record came along. Eric B.’s connections brought them to Marley Marl’s studio, where Rakim could test the verses he had been writing. [1]
During “My Melody,” Rakim recalled being urged to put more energy into his performance and to stand up. He insisted on the quieter delivery he wanted. The audience’s response when the record reached radio persuaded him that rap could become his future. [1]
Zakia issued the two songs together in 1986, with dub versions on the reverse. A 4th & Broadway edition followed the same year. These early singles led into Paid in Full, while preserving the spare setting in which Rakim’s voice first made its impact. [2] [3]
