1,000 Hours

A tiny mountain house party led to Green Day’s first record. Larry Livermore heard the teenage band, still called Sweet Children, playing for five schoolchildren and decided almost immediately that he wanted to release their music. [2]

Release history and significance

Livermore recalled the autumn 1988 show in an off-grid Mendocino County cabin: a generator supplied the electricity and candles provided the light. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were sixteen. The audience was small, but the performance convinced the Lookout! co-founder that the group belonged on record. [2]

Released in 1989, 1,000 Hours features Armstrong, Dirnt and drummer John Kiffmeyer. “1,000 Hours” and “Dry Ice” occupy the A-side; “Only of You” and “The One I Want” complete the EP. The green vinyl and photocopied sleeve preserve the modest physical form of this early Lookout! release. [1]
