Everybody
Madonna’s first single found its audience on a dance floor before it reached record shops. She brought a cassette of “Everybody” to Danceteria DJ Mark Kamins, who played it in the club and helped turn the demo into a Sire release. [1]

Release history and significance
Madonna wrote “Everybody” and included it on the four-song demo that helped secure her record deal. Released in the autumn of 1982, the twelve-inch was her first commercially available single and later appeared on her debut album. [2]
Kamins remembered Madonna as a regular dancer at Danceteria whose energy stood out. After the cassette worked in his set, he took it to record executives, eventually reaching Seymour Stein at Sire. [1]
For the recording, Kamins brought a drummer, keyboard player and guitarist together to play at the same time. He recalled Fred Zarr’s keyboards and a reversed snare sound as key ingredients. The twelve-inch paired the vocal with a long dub version, giving DJs another way into the track. [1] [3]
