Any Love
Massive Attack’s first single began with a visit to Smith & Mighty’s studio. Grant Marshall brought singer Carlton McCarthy and a rhythm he could demonstrate with his voice; Rob Smith helped turn that idea into “Any Love.” [1]

Release history and significance
Smith remembered Marshall beatboxing the rhythm while Carlton sang. Making the track involved small, practical decisions: Smith wanted a tambourine, Marshall initially resisted it, and they eventually agreed to put it in. The session was about getting a record made, long before anyone knew what Massive Attack would become. [1]
The 1988 twelve-inch credits Massive Attack alongside Daddy Gee and Carlton, with production shared by Massive Attack and Smith & Mighty. Four versions spread the song across the record: the main vocal, a bonus version, an instrumental and an a cappella. It is a working DJ record as well as a debut. [2]
