Mobility

When Moby joined Instinct, he remembered a label without an office, employees or even a name. “Mobility” emerged from that small beginning in 1990. On its reverse was the first version of “Go,” still waiting for the transformation that would make it a hit. [1]

Release history and significance

Before putting his own name on this EP, Richard Hall had released “Time’s Up” as the Brotherhood. He recalled handing that record to Frankie Bones in a DJ booth and hearing it mixed into the set immediately. Bones offered encouragement: the music had a future. [1]

Mobility followed with two treatments of the title track, “Go” and “Time Signature.” Moby wrote, produced and arranged all four. The original “Go” preceded the later remix built around the Twin Peaks chord sequence—the version that carried him into the UK charts. [1] [2]

For live appearances, he chose a physical, direct approach inspired by punk performers. Instead of remaining behind a keyboard, he wanted to engage the crowd. The EP belongs to that moment when a producer of small underground releases was learning how to become a frontman. [1]
