Just What I Needed / I’m in Touch with Your World

Release history and significance

The Cars spent 1977 playing New England clubs and refining an unusually strong set of original songs. A nine-song demo reached WBCN and WCOZ, where “Just What I Needed” received heavy airplay. That local following helped the band secure its deal with Elektra. [2]

In London, producer Roy Thomas Baker and engineer Geoff Workman recorded the debut album at AIR Studios. Workman recalled that the band arrived knowing its arrangements so well that the recording took nine days. “Just What I Needed,” sung by bassist Benjamin Orr, was the first track they recorded there. [3]

Workman remembered Greg Hawkes bringing older keyboards into the control room and quickly finding the right sounds. The combination of Orr’s voice, clipped guitars and Hawkes’s synthesizer gave the single its distinctive balance of direct pop melody and electronic color. It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. [3]

Market context

The Specialty test pressing represents the manufacturing stage of the debut single. Its factory labels and handwritten working information distinguish it from finished commercial copies and radio promos. The two-song configuration is another useful detail when comparing editions. [1]

Physical Description

Black vinyl with Specialty Records Corporation factory test labels. Red ballpoint annotations on the A-side identify the band and the Elektra account, abbreviated “Elek.” The reverse bears “ESB” on the matrix-number line in the same ink and hand.

The disc pairs “Just What I Needed” with “I’m in Touch with Your World,” following the two-song release rather than a same-song radio-promotion configuration. [1]

Condition

The seller graded the vinyl Near Mint. The factory labels and their red-ink annotations are retained.

Provenance
