Market Context & Historical Notes

Issued at the outset of the band’s recording career, Mr Brightside / Smile Like You Mean It represents one of the earliest commercially available artifacts associated with The Killers’ rise within early-2000s independent rock. Releases on Lizard King Records formed the foundation of the group’s initial reception in the United Kingdom, where early pressings have since become closely studied markers of the band’s emergence. The white-vinyl first press is particularly noted among collectors and scholars for its association with the band’s pre-album period and limited scale of production relative to later major-label issues.

Canonical Status in OMMA

Although pre-Mr. Brightside self-released recordings by The Killers have been reported by people in the band’s hometown of Las Vegas, this release is recognized by the Origins of Modern Music Archive as the artist’s canonical commercial debut.
