Call Me a Mack
Usher’s solo recording career began in the company of a film soundtrack. “Call Me a Mack,” made for Poetic Justice, introduced the teenage singer before his first album and gave radio programmers an early glimpse of a new LaFace artist. [1] [2]

Release history and significance
Contemporary coverage in HITS connected the single’s arrival to his appearance on Star Search. Its August 1993 report gathered enthusiastic reactions from radio programmers in Buffalo, Chattanooga and Richmond, along with a Philadelphia retailer who said customers were already asking for the song. The career was taking shape one station and record shop at a time. [1]
The soundtrack appearance was followed by a dedicated LaFace maxi-single. Five versions turn one song into material for different settings: the album version sits alongside “Vincent’s 48Hr Mix,” “Xtra Bits,” “Crazycool Mix” and “Percussamental.” The remix credits include Vincent Herbert, Chad Elliott and Dave Hall. [2]
This release marks Usher’s debut solo single. Its connection to Poetic Justice is central to that beginning: the film’s music placed an emerging singer within a much larger audience’s reach. [1] [2]
